Bernie Rhie was born in Daejeon, South Korea, in 1971, and moved with his parents to the United States in 1974. When he was eighteen, he arrived at the Sonoma Mountain Zen Center in Santa Rosa, California, where he began three years of Zen Buddhist training under the guidance of Jakusho Kwong Roshi. In 1997, he received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley and then went on to pursue graduate training in English literature at the University of Pennsylvania, where he finished, during the summer of 2005, an interdisciplinary dissertation on twentieth-century attitudes towards the human face, under the direction of Professor Susan Stewart. He now teaches in the English department at Williams College.
